Accounting and Finance Manager

Job Summary: The Accounting & Finance Manager is responsible for managing the daily responsibilities of the accounting functions. Duties include revenue and expense recording, reconciling monthly bank statements and general ledger accounts, assisting the CFO in development and tracking of department budgets and forecasts, management reporting for departments, and managing and performing month-end close activities, as well as assisting with the annual independent audit and completion of the organization’s annual tax filings.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Management Responsibilities: 
  • Manage the daily functions of the accounting department, including leading personnel, as directed.
  • Ensure that processes are effective, efficient and documented.
  • Schedule month-end accounting activities to meet reporting deadlines.
  • Ensure that systems are continually improved and operating to their fullest extent.
  • Set self and department goals and complete annual performance reviews for reporting personnel.
Reconciliations:
  • Prepare and/or review month-end general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely and accurate resolution of reconciling items.
  • Ensure that inter-fund balances are cleared and reconciled in a timely fashion.
Financial Reporting: Manage financial matters to include:
  • Prepare the monthly financial statements under ASC 958 not-for-profit accounting rules.
  • Prepare the monthly department budget versus actual report.
  • Interface with department managers to identify causes of expense and revenue variances to the budget.
  • Assist with requests for financial information for grants, surveys, etc.
  • Provide data and pricing analysis to support new initiatives and assist in evaluation of pricing and profitability effectiveness.
  • Prepare annual 1099s.
  • Manage investment activity and reporting and executing transactions in the Endowment Fund.
Period/Annual Closing: Executive Team Management:
  • Prepare and/or review journal entries for period closing
  • Coordinate accounting personnel schedules to ensure all reports are completed
  • Maintain monthly checklist and calendar to support closing process.
  • Prepare and/or review all year-end journal entries.
  • Prepare the annual audit workbook with all supporting documentation and roadmap for financial statements and manage external audit process.
Annual Budget:
  • In conjunction with the CFO, analyze and create annual attendance budgets.
  • Prepare departmental budget templates and perform first review of submitted budgets.
  • Prepare certain department budgets including Finance and Operations.
  • Assist in preparation of revenue budgets for ticketing and concessions.
  • Consolidate department budgets and ensure cohesiveness across reporting.
Banking & Cash Management:
  • Monitor daily and weekly cash balances.
  • Ensure timely and accurate transaction processing, recording, and reconciliation.
  • Monitor and manage credit card accounts and relationships.
  • Responsible for banking administration, e.g. signature cards, etc.
Policies & Procedures:
  • Ensure that significant organizational financial policies are established, documented, and followed.
  • Ensure that internal controls are established and operate in individual areas of responsibility throughout the organization.
Qualifications:
  • 7+ years’ working experience in accounting.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including experience with not-for-profit accounting.
  • This includes the ability to apply these principles and determine compliance with the principles.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of the use of standard financial accounting software.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in preparing clear and concise correspondence and creating spreadsheets.
  • Balance the support of the employee and the organization with fairness and consistency. Must possess the ability to work well with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to work with confidential information and to remain objective at all times. Strong attention to detail is a must.
  • Ability to work independently, with little or no supervision; take initiative and be proactive.
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and in a timely fashion.
  • Previous supervisory skills preferred Experience with Blackbaud accounting software is a plus.
  • Experience with SQL reporting is a plus.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance/accounting or related field
Work Environment and Physical Demands: 
  • Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo
  • Atlanta may require employees to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Routine physical activities are required to fulfill responsibilities
