  • The Animal Care Specialist – Tropical Discovery: Bird/Mammal Section (Zookeeper) will support our mission by providing the safe exhibition, handling, training, feeding, and husbandry of animal species at the Zoo. 
  • This position works in the Tropical Discovery building, which is primarily an ectotherm focused collection. 
  • The building exhibits a diverse collection of tropical freshwater and marine fishes, amphibians, reptiles, some mammals, and one bird.
  • The primary responsibilities will be as a point person for a newly developed Bird/Mammal section, which includes the daily care of Linne’s two toed sloths, capybaras, various species of bats, a keel-billed toucan, and a planned acquisition of a small troop of howler monkeys. 
  • This section may also include a smaller number of reptile and aquatic exhibits as assigned.
  • Successful candidates will have familiarity with all taxa, but a stronger focus in mammal and bird husbandry is preferred. 
  • After a comprehensive certification process, the candidate will also be trained to respond to venomous snakes and dive emergencies. 
  • Additional responsibilities may include leading behind the scenes tours, presenting animal programs, serving on various zoo committees, participating in conservation programs, and performing water quality testing. 
  • Scuba certification and prior experience with venomous reptiles is not required, but preferred.
