Animal Keeper - Variable Hour

Bring your skill and experience as an animal keeper to the Oregon Zoo, where you will support the groundbreaking wildlife conservation and education efforts at one of the nation's most respected zoos.

Multiple positions are available in multiple animal departments, variable-hour staff are limited to a maximum of 1,040 hours per 12-month period.

As an Animal Keeper you will:
  • Perform upkeep, cleaning and disinfecting functions for areas such as barns, cages, yards, pools, food trays and water troughs. Also maintains lab, office and other areas.
  • Perform animal feeding duties such as preparing prescribed diets; set out and offer food in a manner that is most likely to result in total consumption; make precise reports on food consumption.
  • Perform general husbandry tasks such as trimming nails, exercising animals, worming, assisting with breeding programs or other daily routines.
  • Observe animals to identify normal and abnormal behavior; report observations and problems to keepers and/or veterinary staff.
  • Keep records on daily health, behavior and diet, food inventory and supply, breeding and mating activity. Provide enrichment and training opportunities to animals as appropriate for the area.
  • Check conditions of animal environments to assess security and safety for animals, employees, and visitors; report any problems appropriately.
  • Under supervision, administer medications as prescribed by veterinarian; observe animals to determine that medications are taken.
  • May assist with the capture, restraint or segregation of animals for shipment, medical treatment, research or transfer to another area.
  • Provide customer service to zoo guests, answer questions about the zoo and the animals, and assist with tours.

Experience Required
  • TO QUALIFY We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required.

  • Minimum Qualifications Three years professional animal keeper experience, AND A bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, or related subjects relevant to the care of zoo animals, OR Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
  • Required A valid driver's license (check will be completed at time of hire) Special requirements Medical testing and/or immunizations, not otherwise noted it this announcement are required as the duties of this position may require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present.
Salary
  • $28.80 Hourly
