Animal Welfare Scientist

The Animal Welfare Scientist contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by advancing its mission and innovations in science and animal welfare by participating in and conducting research projects that aim to systematically investigate the impact of various aspects of zoo animal management and environment on animal welfare.  Works to validate indicators of animal welfare; identifies and employs non-invasive techniques for study; coordinates and leads multi-institutional studies.  Analyzes and publishes all results and present findings.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinate, conduct, and integrate basic and applied research in animal welfare that furthers an understanding of animal welfare. 
  • Identify measures that advance the scientific assessment of animal welfare. 
  • Provide advice based on the latest scientific discoveries in animal welfare to professionals in animal care.
  • Represent CZS externally to organizations, groups, and individuals including, but not limited to, Association of Zoos and Aquariums (“AZA”), local, national, and international conservation groups, the academic community, and the media.
  • Mentors interns to develop future conservation leaders including development of research, writing and presentations skills.
  • Actively participate in funding initiatives including grant proposals to secure project funding and meeting with individual potential donors.   
  • Training of staff or volunteers at Brookfield Zoo or other collaborating institutions in project methodology to ensure reliable data.
  • Presents research results and conservation applications to scientific and lay audiences.
  • Maintain a strong publication pipeline on scientific journals, books and book chapters, popular literature, and professional presentations.
  • Other related duties as assigned. 
Experience Required
POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. degree in Animal Behavior, Psychology, Endocrinology, Animal Physiology, Animal Science, or related field required.
  • Four years’ experience designing and conducting animal welfare-related studies required. 
  • Four years’ experience with appropriate statistical methods for analyzing a variety of biological data sets, including behavior and psychology data required.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks as necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • English fluency at a professional working proficiency. 
  • Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Experience using non-invasive hormone monitoring and conducting EIA assay analyses preferred.
  • Previous experience working at a zoological institution is desirable.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
