Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is currently offering two exciting opportunities to join our team at the Assistant Curator level with our Bird and Carnivore units in Front Royal, VA!

  • Our focus is on high impact for select species!
  • Our animals and staff achieve applied research, population sustainability, and conservation.
  • Our carnivore team plays leading roles breeding and research programs (assisted reproduction, microbiome, and more) for species including black-footed ferret, cheetah, and maned wolf.
  • The bird team is active in recovery program breeding for whooping cranes, loggerhead shrikes, and Guam kingfisher.
  • The candidate selected for birds will also have the opportunity to train with the Ungulate team, focusing on managing equid herds in large pasture settings (a unique opportunity in AZA zoos!).
  • We are located on 3200 acres in beautiful Front Royal - the Canoe Capital of Virginia and the gateway to Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Shenandoah National Park. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley we have amazing scenery, history, and opportunities for outdoor adventure (the Appalachian Trail borders our property).
  •   We have easy access to the DC Metro area and Dulles Airport.
  • Front Royal, VA - First stop to the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive
  • The Biologist (Assistant Curator - Animal Care) will provide daily care of animals for the National Zoo.
  • This involves, breeding, education, conservation, exhibition, collection planning and support of research for a collection.
In this position, you will:
  • Deliver comprehensive care to a wide range of animal species, including exotic and endangered animals, while following established departmental protocols.
  • Develop species management plans that address the needs of exhibitions, environmental enrichment, animal training, education, research, and conservation.
  • Assign and schedule work, coordinate programs, provide technical work direction, establishing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ensure accurate and complete information on animals is provided to the public in labeling, graphics, and other materials on the collection of animals.
  • Coordinate keeper training, and maintain commissary, supply in support of program goals.
  • Maintain accurate records on animals to ensure complete inventory of all animals
