Zoo Miami is currently has a full time Associate Zoo Veterinarian position available to work in cooperative association with the Chief of Animal Health (Chief Veterinarian) and three other associate veterinarians to provide high quality medical care to the animal collection. We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that will be engaging and deliver exceptional customer service by creating friendly and positive interactions with all guests and co-workers.
- This position reports directly to the Chief of Animal Health.
- This position will work collaboratively with the Chief of Animal Health (Chief Veterinarian), four other associate veterinarians, eight certified veterinary technicians, a nutritionist, and a team of hospital, nutrition, and quarantine husbandry staff to provide high quality medical care to a diverse collection of over 3,000 animals.
Daily Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:
- Works in collaboration with the entire Animal Health team to provide diagnostic, medical, and surgical care to the Zoo Miami animal collection following all protocols, rules, regulations, policies and procedures that are in accordance with AZA, USDA and OSHA standards.
- Assists in implementing and evaluating an all-inclusive animal health program that includes surgery, anesthesia, radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy, pathology, internal medicine and a species-appropriate preventive medicine program.
- Evaluates and prepares health certifications for shipments of animals, and provides medical oversight for new acquisitions while in quarantine.
- Provides recommendations for purchases, repairs, and facilities operations for the zoo’s hospital and quarantine facility; ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
- Assists in the supervision and evaluation of hospital support staff as well as clinical interns/externs and volunteers, including work distribution, training, and problem resolution.
- Provides direct mentorship of veterinary preceptors and One Health medical students.
- Provides guidance in the clinical laboratory, surgical facility, necropsy and pharmacy as needed.
- Ensures controlled-substance record-keeping is accurate and in accordance with DEA regulations.
- Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates; assists with scheduling daily tasks and routine of subordinate employees.
- Assists with maintaining a complete and accurate medical records database for the Zoo Miami animal collection.
- Functions as a team player, fostering a positive, respectful, and supportive work environment, and conducts themselves with enthusiasm and dedication to providing state-of-the-art animal care
- Performs related work as required.
Experience Required
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent veterinary degree. One year of clinical medicine experience is required.
- Must obtain a State of Florida Veterinary license within six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five or more years of zoo or wildlife experience with a comprehensive knowledge of routine diagnostic and surgical practices in zoological medicine.
- The ideal candidate will have experience with a wide range of mammalian, avian, and herpetological taxa, exceptional communication with all levels of staff, and the ability to work independently.
- Experience conducting clinical research, and working with sea turtles, are also preferred.
