The A/V Technical Services Manager advances DZCA’s mission and goals by overseeing all aspects of A/V technology across the zoo campus, combining hands-on expertise with team management and system development. This role directs staff and contractors to manage system integration, technical strategy, and budget, ensuring reliable, high-quality A/V support for events, seasonal enhancements, digital signage, and campus-wide audio and video.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 Staff Leadership and Development

  • Lead and develop a team of audiovisual professionals by overseeing hiring, training, and performance management while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Oversee staff performance management, including coaching, feedback, recognition, and disciplinary processes in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Partner with Engagement and Entertainment managers to lead a department that values cross-program support, matrix management, and integrated guest experiences.
  • Support departmental and zoo-wide professional development initiatives, including audiovisual training, focused on appropriate and professional use of equipment.

Program and Resource Management

  • Ensure audiovisual operations strategically support the Zoo’s mission and enhance the guest experience by aligning technology and staff talent.
  •  Develop and oversee the annual audiovisual budget, including maintenance, capital investments, and staffing resources, ensuring that the allocation of resources aligns with organizational priorities.
  •   Source, contract, and oversee external vendors to support developing and maintaining high-quality audiovisual systems and standards. 

Program Support and Maintenance

  • Maintain and upgrade audiovisual infrastructure, ensuring systems operate reliably and optimally.
  • Ensure rapid response and thorough troubleshooting to resolve audiovisual issues and system malfunctions quickly.
  • Communicate updates and operational changes to leadership and staff effectively.
  • Provide expertise and training for users across the organization, ensuring appropriate use of equipment and systems

Program Design and Development

  • Ensure systems, procedures, and processes are in place to seamlessly operate digital signage, background music, and campus-wide audio.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to assess challenges, identifying how audiovisual resources can be utilized as a strategic solution.
  • Design, integrate, and manage audiovisual systems for permanent installations, temporary events, and programs.

Other Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Other assistance, as designated by the Director of Engagement & Entertainment, to support the overall goals of the department and organization.  DZCA retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
  • Acts as a good steward of the DZCA's resources.
  • This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations. 
  • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of DZCA.

Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications

  •  Completion of a two-year degree in technical theatre, sound design/engineering, audio/visual, or a related field is preferred; however, any equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the position will be considered.
  • Requires a minimum of two years of experience in audiovisual technology management, system integration, and technical services, including supervisory experience. Experience working in a high-volume attraction such as an amusement park, zoo, aquarium, museum, or science center is preferred. An equivalent combination of professional experience, lived experience, and/or special skills that demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the role will also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, are required.
  • Experience with scheduling and incident reporting platforms is preferred.
  • Proven skills with AV control systems is preferred.
  • Requires collaboration, organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize work and tasks.
  • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task, and changing environment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy are preferred.
  • Must be an outstanding communicator and considered to be a developer of people who is comfortable motivating, collaborating, and working with a broad cross-section of people in direct and matrixed relationships.

Position Conditions  

  • Ability to pass a physical examination, background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • To support our operations, candidates must be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • The role requires obtaining IBCCES certification within the first six months of employment.
  • Candidates must obtain QSYS Level 1 certification within the first six months and QSYS Level 2 certification within the first year, with the organization providing support.
  • Schedule Availability: 5-day non-traditional work week (including Saturday and Sunday) with regular availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays, time off planned with notice.
    • Work Location: Onsite 

    Compensation

    Range for this position is $5,168-$6,330 (monthly)
