Whether it's conducting a routine maintenance on the fire panel in the Tiger exhibit, fixing an electrical wire in the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, or checking the PLCs in the Dolphin Pavilion, the Building Automation Specialist position at the Indianapolis Zoo offers an amazing environment to work in! We are currently on the hunt for an experienced Building Automation expert to add to our Facilities team!

  • The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years or more experience working in the commercial or industrial automation systems and building controls field (preferably with Honeywell systems).
  • The chosen candidate will also possess at least one (1) to two (2) years in graphics, programming, installation, and repair of systems.
  • Prior knowledge or experience in general maintenance fields such as electrical, plumbing, and/ or HVAC is highly desirable as this position may be asked to help in other areas.
  • High school diploma or equivalent EET/ Technical Trades degree or equivalent experience/ education in appropriate field is strongly preferred (certificate of training for Building Automation Systems is a plus!).
  • This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, position where shifts may vary due to emergency situations.
  • Flexibility in scheduled hours is a must.
  • This role may demand 24/7 on-call availability. Weekend work, holidays and overtime are required as needed, though we do try to have consistent scheduled days off.
  • Must also possess a valid Indiana driver's license and have a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo's insurance provider.
  • Uniforms, PPE, and tools are provided.
Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):
  • Manages the complete operation of the Building Automation System- maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and expands the control systems utilizing pneumatic, electric, and electronic controls using test and measurement instruments.
  • Manages the complete operation of the Building Automation System- maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and expands the control systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLC's and/or Honeywell controllers (XL10, XL50, XL500, XL800 and CPO).
  • Manages the maintenance and software contracts with Honeywell.
  • Accurately monitors and records temperatures, humidity, ozone, chlorine, and Freon and ozone levels.
  • Works in conjunction with the Life Support Manager, Facilities Manager, and Director of Facilities to maintain and optimize the Life Support and HVAC systems throughout IZS.
  • Works closely with Water Quality Specialist to properly maintain, calibrate, and repair the water quality sensing equipment.
  • Provides all necessary training to all appropriate staff in the operation and use of the Building Automation System.
  • Develops and maintains a documented emergency response protocol.
  • Works with, repairs, and calibrate electronic, pneumatic and electric controls, specialty diagnostic tools, PC networks and proprietary building automation systems.
  • Must be an advanced and competent user of Honeywell Building Automation System Station, HMI web Display Builder, CARE, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
  • Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood-borne Pathogens Guidelines. Possible exposure (Category C employee) to human blood-borne pathogens.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a telephone and two-way radio.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to transport objects.
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
  • Must be able to safely operate department tools and manual transmission vehicles.
  • Adheres to all safety policies and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harness.
