Curator of Primates

As the leader of our primate department, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the well-being of ou primates and associated staff. Collaborate with various zoo departments to create engaging and educational guest experiences that align with the Zoo's mission, vision, and values. An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
  • Lead, manage, and foster the professional development of assigned staff.  Collaborate with the veterinary, behavioral husbandry, and research teams to ensure the wellbeing of animals in the department.
  • Take ownership of assigned team’s engagement, motivation, morale and participation in meeting the OKC Zoo’s organizational goals and objectives.
  • Facilitate the selection of new personnel for assigned areas; manage staff performance, including performance evaluations; recommend performance-based increases and corrective action as needed. Ensures compliance with all standard operating procedures and OKC zoo policies throughout the team.
  • Oversee the health, welfare, and husbandry of assigned areas of the animal collection.
  • Oversee assigned areas to include ensuring horticultural, custodial and overall guest experience needs are met and take personal accountability for ensuring a premium guest experience. Provide input into the assessment of existing physical facilities.
  • Work directly with the Director of Animal Collections to develop and maintain the Institutional Collection Plan and animal-related policies of the assigned animal collection and associated personnel. 
  • Arrange and participate in animal transfers (both on-site and off), communicate with Species Survival Program leaders, makes animal management decisions and recommendations in accordance with organizational goals.
  • Ensure proper documentation of time cards, performance opportunities, training logs, animal enrichment logs, health records, feed records, and any other documentation associated with the assigned areas.
  • Manage the development of capital improvement and maintenance requests; 
  • Participate in Master Planning, exhibit design; 
  • Participate on internal teams, ad-hoc committees, and in AZA-sanctioned and job-related external collaborations and cooperative programs.
  • Oversee the development and management of assigned area budgets. Acquire supplies and materials as needed.
  • Update all safety protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, Risk Assessments for assigned areas as needed.
  • Collaborate with other Zoo teams and departments. Work effectively in a team environment.
  • Plan, participate and advance zoo-wide safety drills, emergency training and planning. Respond and assist with all safety incidents that occur at the zoo.
  • Represent the Zoo by participating in AZA programs, Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs), Species Survival Plan Programs (SSPs), and Studbooks, etc.
  • Develop and participate in conservation activities to support Zoo’s mission.
Experience Required
  • Experience Required: Five (5) years of experience working with relevant taxa in a zoological setting, including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Relevant education in excess of minimum requirement can substitute for experience.
  • Minimum Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field.
  • Relevant experience in excess of minimum requirement can substitute for education.(Advanced degree in the field is preferred.)

Salary
  • $56,442.17-$64,908.50 annually
