What you get to do
  • Establishes and maintains proper safety guidelines in all animal areas and animal interactions
  • Responsible for the oversite and development of Supervisor level ambassadors in accordance with department goals and initiatives.
  • Teach ambassadors proper husbandry procedures, training methods, and safety guidelines through active participation.
  • Provide open communication between management and all members of the department. Responsible for information exchange and follow-up.
  • Responsible for maintaining team member morale and motivation in assigned area(s) and throughout the department.
  • Responsible for the active involvement with management staff in the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget.
  • Responsible for active participation in the development and implementation of department vision, policy, guest relations, and other assigned projects.
  • Responsible for venue maintenance including submitting work orders, working with other departments to ensure work is completed, communicating needs to Senior Leadership, and modifying exhibits and surrounding areas as needed.
  • Responsible for proper staffing of animal areas through effective scheduling. Maintain a flexible work schedule to include participating in all shifts of assigned area and working weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Teach presentation skills through active participation.
  • Provide staff with materials necessary to fulfill animal and ambassador needs (i.e., reading material, video tapes, safety equipment and supplies).
  • Take an active role in concept, design, and implementation of new presentations, interactions, exhibits and tours.
  • Work in conjunction with other departments as necessary. Coordinate with outside vendors and internal ambassadors to accomplish projects such as area construction and park events.
  • Assist in promoting, developing, and completing research projects as opportunities arise.
  • Responsible for the coordination and preparation of semi-annual and annual reviews of departmental team members.
  • Participate in interviewing and making recommendations for staff additions.
  • Represent the park on media related events.
  • Other duties as assigned
What it takes to succeed:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • College degree preferred in Psychology, Biological Sciences or related fields.
  • SCUBA certification required.
  • 10 years internal or equivalent professional aquarium experience in a zoological institution.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a management/leadership role.
  • Prior experience with revenue and expense management preferred.
  • Able to push, pull, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • A working knowledge of the English language with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft software products. Knowledge of SEA systems (Kronos, ParkWare, TRACKS, etc) preferred.
  • Knowledge of all governmental regulations needed at the state and federal level
  • Knowledge of permits and permitting process.
  • Knowledge of animal shipment criteria and regulations.
  • Process and detail-oriented as well as possess the ability to handle multiple projects with strict deadlines in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • Able to work successfully both independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to maintain confidential information appropriately.
  • Demonstrate consistent initiative, creative problem solving skills, excellent communication; written and verbal, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Professional and outgoing presence required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include, weekends, weekdays, overnights, evenings and holidays. Ability to travel if needed.
  • Willing to comply with and ensure ambassadors comply with all SEA grooming guidelines and employment standards.
  • Able to successfully complete all legal, company and department training requirements to include but not limited to passing required tests and certifications within established timelines.
