The Phoenix Zoo is looking for a dynamic and strategic-minded leader for the position of Director of Human Resources (HR). This position serves as a member of the Executive Team and is responsible for managing and leading all functions of human resources and volunteer engagement and is vital to Phoenix Zoo’s organizational development, employee and volunteer engagement strategies, and overall success.

Essential Duties:
  • Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive, and professional) working attitude and appearance.
  • Lead all functions of human resources and volunteer engagement, including employee/volunteer relations and engagement, talent and performance management, training and organizational development, compensation, benefits, workplace safety and health, diversity and inclusion, employment law compliance, and HRIS software.
  • Develop human resources and volunteer engagement strategies to support the overall organizational strategic plan.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate department goals and KPIs.
  • Responsible for the continuous improvement of HR and volunteer programs, policies, practices, and processes.
  • Perform regular “best practices” assessments to enable the development of and compliance with organizational policies, practices and procedures.
  • Recommend, develop and implement programs to sustain positive employee morale and increase employee retention.
  • Identify employee relations patterns, report findings and trends, and develop training and materials to address areas for improvement.
  • Design effective performance appraisal and management tools.
  • Develop and implement leadership and staff training and development programs.
  • Provide guidance to managers on corrective actions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement plans
  • Lead and participate in succession management and workforce planning.
  • Analyzes open positions to balance the development of existing talent and business needs.
  • Serves as coach and expert facilitator of the selection and interviewing process.
  • Develops staffing strategy in collaboration with hiring manager relating to hiring and selection practices.
  • Conduct periodic market assessments of employee pay levels and for responding to outside industry salary surveys.
  • Oversee employee and volunteer engagement and appreciation events and employee health and wellness programs.
  • Define and deliver policies and procedures related to workers compensation injury reporting and back-to work-programs.
  • Oversee risk management issues, conduct high-level investigations of workplace policy violations, and monitor other regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee compliance with OSHA standards and serve as a key member of the Safety Committee.
  • Oversee and manage diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Consider best practices in terms of programmatic enhancements and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Propose, develop, and implement human resource policies and practices that ensure compliance with EEOC, federal, state, and local employment laws by staying informed about pending and current legislation, and communicating with and coaching team members on the correct application of policies.
  • Oversee the management of the HRIS to ensure maximum utilization, accuracy and efficiency. 
  • Ensure that HR systems’ requirements are defined and that systems in place are providing intended results. 
  • Ensure that organizational communication methods are effective and efficient.
  • Manage and assist in the development of the annual department budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred in HR, Business Administration, or directly related field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. 
  • Eight (8) years of progressive HR experience, preferably in a role as Director of HR or HR Manager with at least 3 years of experience effectively managing a team.
  • Proven experience with development and management of personnel policies, practices, compensation, benefit, training and development, and employee relations programs and related current issues
  • Excellent working knowledge of current state and federal employment laws as they relate to employee and workplace matters
  • Phoenix Zoo is open to the public 364 days of the year; therefore, all positions at the Zoo may require employees to work some weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license required. 
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test and DMV check.
