- You will lead the charge in maintaining and repairing of all electrical systems across the zoo grounds.
- Collaborating closely with supervisors and zoo staff, you'll draw on your expertise to plan and execute electrical projects, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of animal care, safety, and guest service.
- From installing conduits to troubleshooting circuits, your hands-on approach will be instrumental in maintaining a safe and functional environment for both inhabitants and visitors alike.
As an Electrician at the Zoo, you will:
- Consult with supervisor and other Zoo staff to determine job requirements, prepares rough working drawings and schematics, estimates materials and obtains parts.
- Collaborate with various Zoo internal stakeholders on projects, including managers, curators, animal keepers, and others to address animal care, horticulture, safety, and guest service needs.
- Install electrical components such as conduits, circuit wiring, transformers, signaling systems, pull boxes and lighting switches.
- Service and repair electrical equipment, including starters, motors, switches and fixtures, and troubleshoots electrical circuits and controls.
- Maintain and repair interior wiring, connections, switches and controls, fuse boxes, breaker panels, distribution and instrument panels, buzzer and bell circuits, audio systems and power circuits.
- Interpret blueprints and specifications for electrical installations and repairs.
- Participate in project planning, bid solicitation, ensuring timely completion and accurate record-keeping.
- Oversee new construction work done by outside contractors, calculate loads and circuit ratings, compile data, prepare reports, assist the public and officials, promote safe work habits and contribute to a positive team atmosphere.
- Function as the Oregon Zoo’s Campus Electrician, performing inspections, installations, and overseeing projects.
Attributes for success
- Proficiency in specialized and standard electrical practices, methods, instruments, tools and materials, alongside awareness of occupational hazards and safety protocols.
- Ability to make quick decisions in emergencies, troubleshoot electrical systems, and adapt swiftly to unforeseen challenges and shifting priorities.
- Understanding the coordination of project planning, project management, estimating materials and contractor services required.
- Ability to work outdoors and in various conditions, lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Understanding and application of building regulations, codes and safety procedures, such as national and state building codes, the National Electrical Code (NEC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
- Comfort working around exotic and sometimes dangerous animals.

TO QUALIFY

- Minimum qualifications
- Trade certificate or equivalent and
- Five years progressively responsible Journey Level Electrical experience or
- Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities
- Required qualifications
- Oregon State General Journeyman Electrical License
- Valid driver's license
- Possession of, or ability to, obtain and maintain all of the following:
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Forklift Truck Operator Certification

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
- The full-salary range for this position is step 1 $43.53 to step 5 $54.83 per hour. However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between step 1 $43.53 to the equity range of step 4 $51.76 per hour.
