Elephant Keeper - Full Time

The Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader of animal conservation and one of the top tourist destinations in Indiana. We're located on a sprawling 93-acre campus in the heart of vibrant downtown Indianapolis. In addition to our animal exhibits, gardens, and aquarium, we support local and international animal conservation efforts. Your passion for animal conservation, and your particular area of interest and experience in African or Asian elephants may qualify you for our full time Elephant Keeper position in our Elephant Department! We have a progressive and internationally respected elephant program, and have conducted pioneering research in training, reproduction, and artificial insemination.

  • The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. Prior professional experience working with African or Asian elephants is required.
  • Prior experience working with elephant births and calves is preferred.
  • The successful candidate must have at least two (2) years' experience working at a Zoo or animal care organization.
  • This position is primarily responsible for all aspects of the elephants' well-being and care, developing and implementing enrichment activities, and participating in research, education, and training.
  • This position requires a lot of flexibility to work cohesively within a small team as well as the ability to work differing shifts including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Position Requirements and Experience (Note:
  • there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):
  • Must have at least one (1) year work experience working with Asian or African elephants and at least two (2) years' experience working in a Zoo or other animal care institution.
  • Prior experience with breeding programs and/ or herd breeding is highly desired.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/ university in Life Sciences, Zoology, or a related field is required.
  • Assists with research projects and exhibit modifications. Displays a professional attitude and appearance to visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Physical strength and stamina required with the ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
  • Exceptional visual acuity is required.
  • Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.) Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record that is insurable by our carrier.
