The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.
SUMMARY:
- Under supervision, performs manual cleaning tasks in buildings, restrooms, and other facilities throughout the Zoo as well as the surrounding areas.
- Custodians are responsible for following established methods and procedures in the application of manual skills and use of cleaning tools, equipment, and supplies to clean facilities and surrounding areas.
- Also performs related work as required by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Sweeps, scrubs, mops and waxes floors; vacuums rugs and carpets.
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms and replenishes supplies; may perform minor duties (e.g., unplugging sinks and toilets); cleans offices and empties and cleans waste receptacles.
- Assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment.
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, blowers, garbage compactor, and other electrical equipment; and uses hoses, brooms, rakes, shovels, pickers, and other equipment as required.
- Picks up paper and trash on Zoo grounds and perimeter parking lots.
- Reports to supervisor evidence of vandalism - broken plumbing, windows, doors, locks.
- Washes interior and exterior windows that can easily be reached from floor or ground level.
- Collects all garbage and recycling throughout the Zoo.
- Operates forklift, scrubbers, electric vehicles, and light trucks.
- Receives and distributes supplies (including light bulbs), UPS, and Fed Ex packages.
- Replaces light bulbs in all areas of the Zoo when it is easily and safely accessible.
- Steam cleans buildings when needed.
- Supports events which includes, but is not limited to, delivery, set up and breakdown of tables, chairs, tents, stages, electrical, lights, barricades, audio-visual, cleaning bathrooms and surrounding areas, and pulls garbage and dumpsters.
- Performs routine maintenance on garbage dumpsters.
- Transports and empties garbage dumpsters.
- Transports recycling dumpsters.
- Turns out and locks doors and windows in buildings when necessary.
- Delivers First Aid supplies throughout the Zoo.
- Coordinates with events staff for upcoming events.
- Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:

EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred, or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum six months paid experience in basic custodial, ability and skill to use and care for janitorial equipment and supplies, able to follow oral and written directions, good communication skills.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid Class C driver’s license preferred.
- Forklift certification required.
- If not, incumbent must enroll in, in-house training and pass certification no later than 90 (ninety) days upon employment.

Rate of Pay:
- $20.33 – $22.50/per hour
