Facilities Maintenance Supervisor

The Supervisor of Facilities Maintenance is responsible for the daily supervision, coordination, and execution of maintenance activities across assigned trades and facility systems. This position provides direct field leadership to maintenance technicians, ensures work is completed safely and efficiently, and supports reliable operation of buildings, infrastructure, and operational assets. The Supervisor oversees work order intake and prioritization, monitors preventative maintenance completion, enforces safety standards, and serves as the first level of technical support and problem resolution. This role ensures maintenance activities support operational continuity, regulatory compliance, and a safe environment for staff, guests, and animals.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise Facilities Maintenance Technicians and assigned trades, including work assignments, prioritization, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Support management in implementing departmental goals, operational standards, and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide regular operational updates and elevate significant issues or resource needs as appropriate.
  • Provide technical oversight to ensure effective troubleshooting, repair practices, and adherence to established standards and procedures.
  • Assist in managing the intake, prioritization, assignment, documentation, and closure of maintenance work orders; monitor backlog, workload distribution, and maintenance performance metrics, including preventative maintenance completion and response times.
  • Ensure effective maintenance and repair of building systems, utilities, and infrastructure through proper planning, staffing, coordination, and execution.
  • Coordinate emergency and urgent maintenance response, providing leadership and decision support during system failures and after-hours incidents as required.
  • Enforce safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices; ensure compliance with OSHA and organizational safety standards; support incident response and corrective actions.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with operations and other departments; support planning for seasonal operations, special events, and capital projects.
  • Monitor inventory of tools, parts, and maintenance supplies and coordinate procurement as needed.
  • Oversee and coordinate work performed by outside contractors and service providers, including scheduling, performance monitoring, and compliance with safety and work standards.
  • Administer and continuously improve training programs; support hiring, onboarding, and professional development of maintenance staff.
  • Lead and develop technicians to maintain buildings and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and reduction of planned and unplanned downtime.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, professionalism, and teamwork.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training or associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of facilities maintenance or skilled trades experience.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of building systems, including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
  • Knowledge of life support systems and grounds maintenance preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and FMX or similar maintenance management software.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational needs and remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly receive and convey instructions and information.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision in support of multiple departments throughout the zoo.
  • Valid driver’s license required to operate Zoo vehicles.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including walking, standing, kneeling, climbing ladders/stairs, and lifting up to 60 lbs.
  • Full-time position requiring flexibility including working evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response support as needed.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions 
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, background check, and TB test.
