This position is responsible for planning, supervising and directing all work associated with Maintenance operations. This position requires collaboration with Zoo staff, contractors and the public to advance the Zoo’s mission by inspiring our guests to care for animals, make connections, build community, and save wildlife.
- Full-Time employees receive our comprehensive compensation package which includes 100% employer paid Medical/Dental/Vision, Employee Assistance Program, 401k, 10 Paid Holidays, Paid Sick and Paid Vacation time on an accrued basis. The pay range for this position $68,640.00 - $75,504.00 annually .

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Participates in the development and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures throughout the Zoo.
- In conjunction with the Director of Facilities & Grounds, assists with the development and monitoring of the annual facilities budget.
- Responsible for the selection of new employees, addressing employee performance, recommending and implementing disciplinary actions, coaching, evaluating employees, defining goals, and recommending pay increases.
- Creates and maintains a safe working environment for all.
- Prioritizes work orders and secures estimates for labor, materials and other costs associated with facilities maintenance and improvements.
- Plans, designs, and schedules facility modification projects. Regularly inspects construction and installation progress.
- Participates in annual deferred maintenance, planning and implementation.
- Direct and oversee the maintenance of Zoo facilities.
- Oversees the service, repair and preventive maintenance of buildings and building systems, vehicles, HVAC equipment, water systems, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other aspects of Zoo facilities.
- Performs general maintenance and repairs as needed, including maintenance of equipment, and calibration and replacement of control equipment.
- Purchases hardware, tools and supplies in accordance with established procedures. Maintains accurate inventory records.
- Responsible for supporting the maintenance team and employee development.
- Provides training for Zoo staff on commercial equipment.
- In conjunction with the Director of Facilities & Grounds, develops and implements Maintenance safety training program.
- Safely operate a vehicle for business purposes including but not limited to going to and from the Zoo’s facilities and offsite.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support team and organizational goals.

- Manages payroll timekeeping for direct reports and oversees the implementation of wage and hour regulations for direct reports.
- Accountable for ensuring all direct reports submit any required training, documents, or other deliverables on time.
- Willingly engages the team and other Zoo staff and proves to be an inspirational leader. Actively create connections that encourage open and honest communication with all.
- Remains accessible to the Zoo staff by cell phone. Uses professional courtesy and only call/texts on day off in the event of an emergency.
- Provides regular performance feedback to reporting staff. Completes timely and appropriate written evaluations that highlight strengths and areas for improvement.
EDUCATION AND JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field of education preferred.
- Minimum five years of facilities-related paid work experience required.
- Two years in a facilities-related managerial role that includes training and overseeing a staff of at least five persons required.
- Minimum five years’ experience in building system operations and maintenance trades including HVAC, plumbing, painting, and electrical systems required.
- Two years of hands-on experience applying safety rules, regulations, and precautions within maintenance and custodial trades.
- One-year prior work experience operating various types of machinery including, but not limited to, forklifts, scissor lift, bobcat, and pallet jacks required.
- Commercial equipment trainer certification is preferred.
- Strong planning, analytical and decision-making skills are required, with the ability to work in a dynamic, evolving organization.
- Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving acumen with a high degree of integrity and ethics.
- Possesses the ability to articulate and inspire support among peers and employees.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of prior work experience using Microsoft Office Suite highly preferred.
- A valid California driver's license, valid vehicle insurance, enrolled in the CA Employer Pull Notice program and successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program required.
- Excellent written and verbal English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.

- The employee must convey detailed or important spoken information to others in small and large group settings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position functions both indoors and outdoors, with possible exposure to heat, cold, inclement weather, Zoo environments and external events
- The employee may be exposed to environmental substances such as dust/dirt from Zoo grounds.
- The position works in close proximity to Zoo animals.
- Regular local travel and occasional out-of-town travel may be required.
- Ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
