  • The Facilities Supervisor is responsible for coordination and management of Operations staff in the general maintenance and upkeep of buildings, exhibits, structures, grounds, and equipment.
  • This roll prioritizes, assigns, and tracks work orders, manages projects, and monitors the work order database and is responsible for maintaining electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and related systems. 
Your Essential Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct the completion of work-orders, projects, and assignments of Operations Technicians.
  • Suggest and implement changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase safety and efficiency of shop, department, and work crew.
  • Prioritize, manage, and coordinate preventive maintenance and repair work orders for TZMI’s exhibits, structures, facilities, grounds, and equipment including MEP and life support systems.
  • Oversee and direct for the maintenance and repair of fencing/barriers and for the execution and oversight of carpentry, metal fabrication, painting, and masonry needs for staff, guests, and animals.
  • Monitor inventory of materials/supplies/equipment needed for department. Determine type and quantity of materials/supplies/equipment. Authorize expenditures of department.
  • Maintain and monitor maintenance records and documents.
  • Prepare payroll, approving and monitoring leave and overtime use.
  • Coordinate and work effectively with outside service providers including but not limited to construction companies, vendors, event providers, municipal entities, emergency services, etc.
  • Assume leadership position in absence of Director of Facilities and Construction or Operations Facilities Manager in case of emergencies such as power outages, inclement weather, etc.
  • Provide clear direction, communication, and sound judgement in routine and unique situations, to include responding to emergencies after hours.
  • Effectively communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills with all levels of employees in a clear and professional manner.

  • Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and assigned training sessions.
Supervisory Responsibilities                                                        
  • This position directly supervises up to 7 Operations Technicians in accordance with TZMI’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Required Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
  • Must be 18 years or older, possess a valid driver’s license, and be insurable on TZMI’s insurance carrier
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings
  • No education requirement; one to three years related experience and/or training
  • Must have broad knowledge of the following: construction, plumbing, mechanical utilities, and HVAC systems; maintenance and/or construction trades terminology, practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the building trades; maintenance and construction methods and techniques, systems, codes, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees of TZMI, and the general public
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Microsoft Word; Microsoft Excel; Microsoft PowerPoint or Prezi; common Internet browsers; experience with work order system preferred
