Sunset Zoo is home to over 100 animals across 40+ species, and we're seeking a dedicated, passionate individual to help lead our animal care team.
- As Head Keeper, you will collaborate closely with our Zoo Curator to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare, including daily husbandry, behavioral training, enrichment, record-keeping, nutrition, and health.
- You’ll lead a team of nine skilled Animal Keepers, guiding them through training, projects, and hands-on care, all while maintaining a safe, supportive environment for both staff and animals.
- In this hands-on leadership role, you'll also assist in updating and maintaining Zoo protocols to ensure legal compliance and adherence to best practices in animal husbandry.
- This is a dynamic position that requires flexibility and the ability to step in and provide direct animal care when necessary.
- The Head Keeper will oversee the daily operations of the Animal Care Department in the absence of, and under the direction of, the Zoo Curator, while also contributing to the overall operation of Sunset Zoo by serving as Administrator on Duty on a rotating basis.

Experience Required
- Required Education and Experience :
- Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Animal Science or related field OR High school diploma and 5 years of progressive experience as a professional zookeeper, with at least 2-4 years of management experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience performing animal capture and restraint.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Three (3) years of progressive experience in animal care.
- CPR certification.
Salary
- $57,346 to $71,688, DOQ
