Hospital Manager

Under the direction of the Senior Staff Veterinarian the Hospital Manager provides supervision, oversight, and support for the day-to-day operation of the animal health department to ensure high-quality animal health care.  The Hospital Manager is a key member of the animal care team and will assist in the opening of a new state-of-the-art 25,000-square-foot veterinary medical center for Phoenix Zoo, which is scheduled to open in late 2026. 

Essential Duties:                                          
  • Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive and professional) working attitude and appearance. 
  • Schedules and maintains operating calendar for veterinary services; manages office operations for the Zoo Hospital; triages inquiries and serves as liaison for the veterinary staff to Zoo personnel to facilitate services provided to the animal collection.
  • Coordinates the organization and maintenance of medical record keeping; provides relevant medical records; coordinates the shipment of animals and shipping of specimens for diagnostic and/or research purposes; serves as liaison for the Zoo to related institutions; ensures compliance with regulations and SSP, TAG and other institutional obligations.
  • Facilitates and assists as a veterinary specialist with medical/surgical procedures, anesthesia, radiography and necropsies.
  • Provides laboratory analyses including hematology, chemistry, parasitology and other clinical pathological procedures; ensures quality control of laboratory results; maintains the diagnostic equipment in calibrated working order; maintains the laboratory in a clean, professional state.
  • Develops technical protocols, maintains quality control and accuracy of laboratory clinical techniques.
  • Assists in developing, administering and monitoring department budget.
  • Oversees maintenance of inventory of required surgical, medical, pharmacological and office supplies. Assists with maintenance of Controlled Substances Inventory records.
  • Oversees maintenance, cleanliness and sterility of hospital facilities and equipment.
  • Oversees procurement of all outside laboratory and veterinary consulting services.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationship with animal care department in order to provide superior medical care for the collection
  • Produces correspondence for department, performs general clerical duties, answers general inquiries and serves as the main point of contact for day-to-day business.
  • Supervises the selection, scheduling, work direction, training and evaluation of volunteers, veterinary technician students, undergraduate and graduate students
  • Oversee Hospital staff including but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, training, performance management and coaching and counseling.
  • Design and administer safety, health and security regulations and training to meet the continuous and changing needs of the department.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance - including preparation and facilitation of AZA, USDA, IACUC, Hazardous Material, Fire, Radiologic Safety, OSHA and DEA inspections.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary technician program or equivalent combination of training, experience, and education is required and must have successfully passed the VTNE. Certified Veterinary Practice Managers with proof of certification may also be considered.
  • Possession of an Arizona State Veterinary Technician license in good standing is required or the ability to transfer a current Veterinary Technician license to Arizona within six months of hire.
  • Minimum of 3 years of veterinary technician experience within a clinical setting is required. Greater than one-year practical veterinary technician experience with exotic pets or in a zoological setting as well as supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Interest in obtaining certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist in the field of zoo medicine will be supported but is not required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written is required.
  • Must be able to aid in the development of current and new team members in a supportive environment by conducting performance reviews, encouraging continuing education initiatives, and providing constructive feedback in a timely manner.   
  • Excellent planning, organization skills, and multi-tasking in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision is required. 
  • Ability to effectively train, manage, and motivate personnel and work in a team environment. Also, able to build trust-based relationships with animal care staff and all zoo team members and contacts.
  • Ability to adhere to, develop, and update standard operating procedures and protocols including but not limited to safety protocols.
  • Provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with zoo guests is required.
  • Computer proficiency with experience using word processing and spreadsheet programs is required. Experience with ZIMS or other zoo-based computer medical record systems is preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot medical equipment and programs and perform scheduled maintenance is required.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines relating to the application of veterinary medicine in zoological parks and related programs is preferred.
  • Ability to be on call and work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.  
  • Ability work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry it for up to 10 yards.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Possession of valid driver license.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test, DMV check and proof of negative TB screening prior to placement is required as well as annual TB screenings thereafter.
