  • This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago (“BZC”) by performing skilled craft duties throughout the park in support of BZC’s mission and operating goals with minimal guidance.  
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Senior Craftsworkers are expected to perform a variety of duties that may include any or all of the following. 
  • Specific assignments will vary depending upon the nature of work performed and/or specific duties assigned.
  • Ensures facilities systems are functional, well maintained, and support BZC’s conservation communication objectives. 
  • Ensures work performed provides a safe environment for guests, staff, and the animal collection.
  • Perform skilled craft duties related to facilities systems throughout the park with little or no supervision, ensuring work/services meet section standards, clients’ specifications, applicable codes, standards, program goals, and is aesthetically pleasing.
  • This includes routine craftsworker tasks, preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, special events work, emergency/safety-related work, unanticipated special repairs, unanticipated capital projects, and overhead tasks.
As assigned, coordinate routine maintenance, special repair, capital and other repair projects:
  • Perform routine inspections of facilities. 
  • Perform routine tasks as needed. 
  • Coordinate projects and discuss repairs with appropriate personnel. 
  • Provide technical advice as requested.
  • Advise staff of resource needs. 
  • Monitor schedule and communicate pertinent information to all affected parties.
  • Ensure projects take place with least amount of encroachment on guests and the animal collection. 
  • Ensure proper signage is utilized and safety barricades are in place where needed.
  • Ensure work performed meets specified quality control standards.
  • Perform highly skilled-level duties as assigned. 
  • Provide Manager with resource needs for budget development. 
  • Assist in controlling the operating budget by ensuring the proper and efficient utilization of allocated resources. 
  • Provide Manager with facility survey data. 
  • Perform tasks associated with the sections’ special events operating program. 
  • This includes performing skilled craft duties, providing estimates and communicating all pertinent information to Managers and other appropriate parties. 
  • Carry out and assist in the administration of tasks associated with the section’s standard operating procedures including, but not limited to equipment and shop maintenance, safety, inventory, purchasing, facility surveys, and utility location. 
  • Ensure all work performed meets set standards and specification and complies with established quality control standards.
  • Perform duties associated with the section’s overhead operating program. 
  • Accurately complete daily labor allocation sheets without direct supervision.
  • Provide guidance to new personnel. 
  • Attend and participate in meetings as assigned. 
  • Participate in the section’s emergency response and animal welfare program as assigned.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Experience Required
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or educational equivalent (e.g., GED.)
  • Graduate of an accredited apprenticeship program, six (6) years of experience at a journeyman level, or six years’ equivalent training and experience required.
  • Six years’ relevant experience required.
  • Ability to perform all traditional tasks related to the field.
  • Must possess skills in related fields; HVAC systems and components including boilers, RTU’s AHU’s, pumps, A/C and refrigeration units, Chillers, building automation and controls and experience with working with voltages up to 480V 3Phase.
  • Must possess a universal refrigeration card or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform math commensurate with field of responsibility and required job duties.
  • Proactive, persistent, and helpful.
  • Team player.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge with all codes and regulations related to trade.
  • May be required to possess or obtain relevant certification and registration card related to field within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and construction specifications.
  • Basic computer skills required with Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Ability to learn new software.
  • Good troubleshooting skills.
  • Self-starter with good project organization skills.
  • English fluency at a professional working proficiency.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver’s license required at time of hire.
  • Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.
DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Universal refrigeration card or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • This may also include vaccinations, inoculations, blood tests, hearing tests, or other such testing or procedures deemed reasonably necessary.
