JOB TITLE: Manager, WildCare Park Maintenance          

LOCATION: Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park        

REPORTS TO: Director, Maintenance

DEPARTMENT: WildCare Park Maintenance

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time

 

SUMMARY: The Manager of WildCare Park Maintenance will provide oversight of the day-to-day operations responsible for the maintenance and repair of the physical facilities and grounds of the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park. As a key leader within the Facilities and Planning Division, this position will support the Zoo’s mission and advocate the Zoo’s core values and three keys.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following reflects Management’s definition of essential functions for this position but does not restrict additional assigned tasks.  Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position.

 

  • Plan, coordinate and direct the daily activities of the WildCare Park Maintenance Department including all facets of building maintenance, in-house construction, repairs, and grounds work.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance scheduling and routine servicing of all equipment.
  • Manage the CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventive maintenance programs and record keeping. Train necessary staff in its use.
  • Supervise and schedule team members to ensure timely completion of work orders.
  • Maintain building systems, equipment, grounds, and utilities in accordance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor maintenance budgets, supply orders, and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Ensure constant communication with all internal stakeholders with regular progress reports and CMMS status updates.
  • Utilize Zoo purchasing policies to procure, coordinate and oversee contractual services for the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.
  • Ensure accuracy for the department of the Zoo’s HCM software platform for time and attendance, payroll, benefits, and workforce management.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and fence lines.
  • Work with volunteer and apprenticeship programs.
  • In partnership with Safety and Risk Management, implement and enforce best practices and standards to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Participate in safety meetings and support emergency preparedness plans.
  • Know and understand the Zoo employee handbook and adhere to all stated disciplinary actions and personnel policies.
  • Work in close collaboration with all Zoo internal departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage a small team of trades personnel.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, innovation, and customer service.
  • Create performance plans in line with the organization’s performance management program and evaluate employee performance throughout the year.
  • Mentor rising talent and create career development pathways to retain top performers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in a maintenance-related field required.
  • 2+ years of experience in a management position preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with automated technologies, CMMS, and Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Possession or the ability to obtain OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with subordinates, peers and superiors.
  • Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and odd hours as needed.
  • Experience with Association of Zoos and Aquariums standards and accreditation process a plus.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safety-sensitive role, a negative drug test result is mandatory. The drug test screens for five substances, including marijuana.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to access all areas of buildings, grounds, public and “behind the scenes” exhibit areas located across the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry and load 40 pounds a distance of 20 feet.
  • Physical capacity to endure exposure to inclement weather and hazardous situations. Use of proper PPE, engineering controls, and other mitigating tools will be required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position will spend an estimated 50% of their time on grounds and 50% in an office environment. Significant exposure to weather is possible.
