Zoo Miami is currently seeking 2 exceptional individuals to support our keeper staff with their animal husbandry efforts, in our Atlantic and Australia teams. These teams work with a variety of taxa which may include mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
- We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that is looking to enter the animal care field at a high-performing AZA institution.
- Candidates will be relied on heavily to support the animal husbandry routines as well as provide guest engagement opportunities by being approachable, engaging and passionate while delivering exceptional customer service.
- This position reports directly to the Animal Care Supervisor.
- They are responsible for the daily maintenance and care of the animals and exhibits in their assigned routine including raking, shoveling, sanitation, enrichment, record keeping and dispensing food and water as directed.
- Also, provides exemplary guest service experiences to all zoo guests through guest engagement opportunities such as animal handling and public presentations.
- Work hours are up to 29 per week on a varying schedule.
Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:
- This is professional work in providing the daily maintenance and care of the animals and exhibits in their assigned routine including raking, shoveling, sanitation, enrichment, record keeping and dispensing food and water as directed as well as providing exceptional customer service through engagement while creating friendly and positive interactions with all guests and co-workers.
CORE DUTIES:
- Daily maintenance routines of indoor and outdoor exhibits including ranking of debris and feces, cleaning of water and food dishes, cleaning of bedding, draining and cleaning of pools as set forth by AZA, USDA, and Zoo Miami.
- Daily maintenance routines of hospitalized patients, animals in quarantine, resident animals, and will support functions in the sea turtle and aquaponics center when facility is operational.
- Assist with daily cleaning and stocking of the hospital, quarantine buildings.
- Assists guests with zoo questions and/or reading and interpreting zoo rules and safety signs; assists guests with providing accurate information on facility attractions and activities; observes and reports unusual incidents and behaviors by guests and/or animals.
- Assists in the distribution of diets at exhibits; assists in the maintenance and disinfection of food preparation and distribution areas.
- Assists in distribution and preparation of enrichment materials.
- Records animal behavior observations and maintains records in accordance with protocols or as directed.
- Performs related duties including special projects as required.
- Experience Required
Minimum Qualifications:
- Eighth grade.
- One year of experience in guest service or general labor is required.
- Must possess a Driver license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree and six (6) months of experience in an accredited facility is highly preferred.
