Park Operations - Assistant Manager

The Park Operations Assistant Manager assists with hiring of new staff members, conducts orientation and training of team members, and assists with corrective action and evaluation of performance. Excellent customer service skills are necessary in dealing with a sometimes-complex zoo environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor the performance and assist with the evaluation of Expedition Guides, Security and Park Attendants.
  • Train proper boat operation and supply basic animal and conservation information to guides.
  • Evaluate emergency procedures and conduct drills with Expedition Guides
  • Work in conjunction with animal department through monitoring island system to ensure welfare of primates and guest safety.
  • Guide pontoon boats safely though a small lake within the zoo while giving tours to primate inhabited islands.
  • Coordinate maintenance of four pontoon boats with the Park Operations Manager and zoo maintenance department.
  • Work with the Maintenance team to coordinate a variety of repairs and projects throughout the zoo.
  • Train Park Attendants on proper cleaning protocols and consistently monitor performance to ensure cleanliness standards are maintained.
  • Coordinate and assist with daily cleaning of all buildings and restrooms as well as the interior of the park.
  • Assist with creating and implementing daily cleaning schedules.
  • Consistently monitor the park to ensure overall cleanliness and safety.
  • Evaluate and update security protocols with regards to perimeter security and emergency preparedness.
  • Manage general and janitorial supply inventory and assist with ordering.
  • Monitor the operations gate and assist with delivery logistics and perimeter security.
  • Coordinate and supervise a variety of 3rd party and contractor visits including but not limited to pest control, maintenance, locksmiths and compliance inspections.
  • Assist with the distribution and inspection of safety equipment.
  • Assist with inventory management and distribution of locks, keys and radios.
  • Serve as the Manager on Duty when scheduled. This includes leading emergency response efforts, rendering of first aid and addressing guest related issues.
  • Participate in safety meetings, evaluate and address any safety concerns that arise within the park.
  • Formulate, implement and review emergency response policy zoo wide.
  • Enforce zoo rules and regulations.
  • Act as a source of information for guests.
  • Assist with scheduling and assigning duties to Park Services staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous management experience required.
  • Minimum 18 years old.
  • Prior boat maintenance or operation experience preferred but not required.
  • Prior janitorial or facilities management preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors for an extended period.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Ability to interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; evaluate performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems. 
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings. 
  • Must have the ability to work independently.
  • Multi-lingual is a preferred with the ability to speak Spanish a plus. 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid Driver License required.
Physical requirements:
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time, ride a bicycle and drive Zoo golf carts.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects or controls. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch. 
Work Environment:
  • A large percentage of duties are performed outdoors in various weather conditions, ranging from rain, wind, cool to cold weather, and extreme heat and humidity. 
  • It is possible the employee will be exposed to dust and harsh chemicals that if not handled properly may present a health hazard. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
