From giraffes to cheetahs, to tigers, white rhinos and hoofstock, our Plains Keepers do it all! The Indianapolis Zoo is currently searching for a full-time Plains Keeper to join our herd!
- The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.
- Daily responsibilities of this position include, exhibit and animal holding maintenance, diet preparation, training animals, record keeping, and assisting veterinary staff as needed.
- Prior experience working with hoofstock, reindeer, rhinos, tigers, brown bears, red pandas, kangaroos, and/ or cheetahs is highly desired, prior work in the animal care industry is required.
- The successful candidate must display a professional attitude and appearance to all visitors, co-workers, and volunteers. Must be strongly team-oriented and possess excellent communication (both written and verbal) skills.
- This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, position that will be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- This role involves a great deal of interaction with the general public, requiring good speaking skills and the ability to provide outstanding customer service.
- This position will assist with training of seasonal care staff, interns, and volunteers.
Position Requirements and Experience (Note: there are strenuous physical requirements to this position including but not limited to):
- Bachelor’s degree in a Life Science area from an accredited college/university in life sciences is required.
- At least two (2) years of prior work experience at a zoo or animal care-related organization is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures.
- Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.
- Ability to ascend/ descend ladders, steps and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium while performing various jobs.
- Exceptional visual acuity is required, along with the ability to communicate, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio.
- Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens.
- Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.) Must follow Universal Protection
- Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.
