Public Relations Manager

If you love landing headlines, shaping brand narratives, and telling stories that matter—this is your role. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is looking for a bold, strategic Public Relations Manager to own our media presence and amplify our impact as a world-class conservation organization and must-see destination. You’ll be the voice behind our biggest stories—animal arrivals, conservation breakthroughs, marquee events, and unforgettable guest experiences.

  • Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing & Communications, you’ll drive earned media strategy, pitch standout stories, manage high-profile moments, and protect a trusted brand with a national reputation.
What You’ll Do
  • Be the go-to media contact and trusted spokesperson for The Living Desert
  • Pitch, land, and grow coverage across local, regional, and national outlets
  • Lead publicity for signature events like WildLights, Gala, Mission: Pollination!, and new exhibits
  • Turn conservation science, animal stories, and experiences into buzz-worthy headlines
  • Write sharp press releases, media kits, and executive talking points
  • Coordinate interviews, media visits, filming, and press events
  • Lead crisis communications with confidence and sound judgment
  • Track coverage, sentiment, and trends to maximize visibility
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Conservation, and Development on integrated campaigns
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in PR, Communications, Journalism, or related field
  • 7–10 years of proven PR success (nonprofit, cultural, tourism, or mission-driven organizations a plus)
  • A strong track record of securing earned media that moves the needle
  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, and editing skills
  • Media relations expertise; Southern California/Coachella Valley connections preferred
  • Calm, confident leadership in high-pressure or sensitive situations
  • Highly organized, strategic, and collaborative work style
Bonus Points
  • Zoo, aquarium, museum, or conservation experience
  • Science or environmental storytelling background
  • Tourism or destination marketing experience
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)

  • $80,000.00 - $90,000.00/Yr
