Public Safety Officer

As the Public Safety Officer you will:
  • Provide for the safety of all while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment. Be a guest services ambassador in making all guests feel welcome. Answer questions and give directions.
  • Be committed to racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Provide excellent customer service and support to zoo guests.
  • Interact with guests, staff, and responders in a calm, professional and courteous manner. Respond appropriately and promptly to guest requests and complaints. 
  • Effectively interacts with diverse teams and people.
  • Respond to any safety related incidents including first aids, medicals and guests incidents and have the ability to deescalate and problem solve decisively.
  • Assist contractors and vendors. Monitor buildings, alarm panels, CCTV, keyless access systems, and computer data entry.
  • Monitor and patrol zoo grounds on foot (64 acres; may exceed 10 miles during the course of a shift). Observe, inspect and report violations of zoo policy and local/state/federal laws. Report to management and cooperate with law enforcement as needed.
  • Take appropriate action to ensure the safety all persons in the zoo within the limits of Zoo policy, Metro code, DPSST regulations.
  • Perform monthly checks of fire and safety systems, fire extinguishers and first aid supplies. Maintain professional appearance and presentation.
  •  Recognize and respond to changes in normal conditions that may lead to safety or security risks including contacting appropriate outside agencies.
  • Assist medical personnel by directing traffic, providing crowd control and securing needed equipment. Perform lock- up and unlock of buildings.
  • Issue keys and/or key cards to employees and maintains key log; activate and deactivate keys as required.
  • Act as liaison between Oregon Zoo, Portland Parks & Recreation, Portland Police Bureau and District Attorney's office regarding legal incidents on Metro property.
  • Prepare and maintains a variety of records and reports on all safety, security, medical and emergency situations. Provide Basic First Aid/CPR/AED as needed.
  • Maintains accurate log of all DAR, Pass-on and Reportable activities.

  • Ability to keep positive demeanor and deal courteously with the public; anticipate guest needs and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to maintain operational records and prepare related reports in writing and on a computer and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Detail- oriented with the ability to be flexible, manage multiple tasks, shifting priorities and work under pressure.
  • Ability to walk up to ten miles per day and run from one area of the facility to another in an emergency situation. Ability to accurately assess a medical situation and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to work independently.

TO QUALIFY

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED, AND
  • Six months of responsible experience in providing security; OR
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill and ability required for successful performance of the essential job duties.
Required:
  • Possession of an Oregon private DPSST certification. 
  • Valid driver's license.
Special Requirements:
  • May be required to pass a Fit test for a N95 respirator
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR, First Aid and AED certification.
Schedule:
  • This is a full-time position.
  • Scheduling is based on seniority, and the projected shift for this role is overnight.
  • Due to overnight shift, this position may qualify for shift differential pay.
Salary
  • $23.81 - $31.92 Hourly
