Responsibilities:
- Given objectives, set by the Director of Guest Services and Safety, is responsible for monitoring safety and health regulations to minimize hazards while establishing and maintaining a positive safety minded culture throughout the Zoo and Garden.
- This position will work closely with all departments to develop safety programs, department specific safety training, and drills to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and industry standards.
- This role is responsible for mitigating risks for guests and staff.
Essential Functions:
- Ensures Riverbanks’ SDS program is communicated and available to all staff.
- Maintains records and documents for all safety training, inspections, and drills.
- Manages radio system, programming, tracking and repairs of all radios.
- Manages the firearms response team to include working with the Animal Division in dangerous animal response training.
- Performs risk assessments and safety audits. Inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance, including monthly OSHA workplace inspections.
- Maintains and posts all OSHA related paperwork and conducts internal investigations when requested by OSHA.
- Investigates accidents, near-miss incidents, visitor injuries and occupational injuries to determine causes and preventive measures.
- Key point of contact for all safety related issues.
- Provides technical advice, guidance, and mentoring to departments and employees on safety initiatives and supports staff on appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Works to maintain all AZA, OSHA, NFPA safety guidelines and standards.
- Responds to emergency calls after normal operating hours.
- Oversees Johnson Controls fire service contract with Riverbanks Zoo.
- Evaluates Riverbanks’ safety policies, SOP’s, and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and health regulations and offers insight into industry changes and necessary updates at Riverbanks.
- Education and Experience: A bachelor’s or associate degree in a Health and/or Safety related field with a thorough knowledge of federal and state occupational safety and health regulations, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and presentation skills which will aide them in addressing workplace safety issues and implementing training programs.
- They will enjoy working within a collaborative environment and be a team player who productively engages with others at varying levels of seniority.
- Being able to demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and observation skills, attention to detail, and prompt follow-through will be critical in this role.

- They will have a thorough working knowledge of current computer applications to include MS Office Suite.
- Possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver's license.
Salary
- $45,000-$50,000/yr., commensurate with experience
