Safety & Risk Management Coordinator – (Full-Time)
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Directly Reports to: Director of Safety & Risk Management
Department: Safety & Risk Management
Classification: Exempt

Position Summary: The Safety & Risk Management Coordinator will work with the Director of Safety & Risk Management to effectively promote and maintain an organizational-wide culture of safety by working closely with all departments. The Coordinator will help support the effective development, implementation, tracking, and maintenance of safety programs that assist the Zoo in maintaining compliance with all applicable health and safety related regulations or standards, and manage appropriate documentation.

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct and/or participate in regular safety inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, as well as reduce risk of injury for guests and staff.
  • Proactively address non-compliant or hazardous situations by collaboratively working with department leaders and staff to develop a timely solution.
  • Assist with accident investigations to identify root cause and generate recommendations to reduce or eliminate hazards and perform follow-up inspections to verify effectiveness/resolution.
  • Assist with management and oversight of the PPE (personal protective equipment) program.
  • Help develop health and safety-related training materials (including within the organization’s Learning Management System Platform), conduct the training or facilitate Manager/Supervisor conducted training; manage recordkeeping.
  • Assist with leading safety meetings for various departments.
  • Assist with annual written policy and program updates, and all applicable annual training with those updates.
  • Assist with the review of all workers’ compensation claims, including investigation, reporting, and claims management.
  • Assist with environmental health program management, including hazardous waste, human biohazard waste, sharps waste, indoor air quality concerns, hazardous material testing, and any applicable training relating to environmental health.
  • Lead the Organization’s safety committee, including initiatives, supporting safety committee goals, and serving as the liaison between the committee and safety department leadership.
  • Assist the Human Resources team with the organization's wellness committee.
  • Assist the Director of Safety & Risk Management by serving as a secondary point of contact for the St. Louis Children’s Hospital First Aid Station.
  • Other duties include organizing and running meetings, keeping meeting minutes, recordkeeping, document creation, including PowerPoint, excel, and other training items, managing data entry, training records, and answering phones.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive and HIPAA/PII information confidentially and with integrity. All other duties and projects as assigned, including assisting the People and Culture Division with certain projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with emphasis in Environmental & Occupational Health and Safety, public health, or other applicable fields of study.
  • Experience in safety and risk management or public health preferred.
  • Experience with project planning and management is a plus.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office, including Microsoft Teams and/or Zoom, and SharePoint. Experience with UKG is a plus.
  • Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills and the ability to manage a varied number of tasks and projects at one time.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and productively with many different departments, and have attention for detail.
  • Must have ability to interact with guests and employees in a productive manner.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safety-sensitive role, a negative drug test result is mandatory. The drug test screens for five substances, including marijuana.

Physical Demands: This role has responsibilities at all 3 Saint Louis Zoo campuses, in all weather conditions, with varying terrains. Must have the physical ability to stand for long periods of time and be able to walk Organization campuses in all types of weather; must have ability to visit and walk the Saint Louis Zoo campus (100+ acres), Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park (North County; 400+ acres), and Saint Louis Zoo Sears Lehmann, Jr. Wildlife Reserve (Franklin County; 400+ acres). May have to work on-site at different locations on different days of each week.

Work Schedule: May require some evening, weekend, and holiday hours. This role has emergency response requirements and responsibilities that sometimes fall outside typical business hours.
