- The Indianapolis Zoo’s Safety and Security team work diligently to provide a safe, secure environment for our guests, volunteers, employees, animals, and plants.
- This role would lead the day-to-day operations of the Security Department for the institution, its guests, property, plants and staff.
- This role will work in concert with the Director of Security & Safety in all aspects of security services.

- Must have at least five (5) years of previous experience working in law enforcement, security, safety, or other related fields.
- To be successful in this role, prior experience supervising staff is highly desirable.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred.
Responsibilities and Requirements include but are not limited to:
- This is a full-time, 40 hours/ week position that requires the flexibility to work varying shifts and schedules. Working some weekends, evenings, and holidays are a requirement.
- Must adhere to and follow all protocols and policies that the Zoo has put in place.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Have a valid Indiana Driver’s License and insurable by Indianapolis Zoo’s insurance.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
- Responsible for administrative procedures of the department including staff training, scheduling, hiring, record keeping, employee evaluation, discipline, recommends and works with the Directors of Security and Safety and Human Resources on all terminations and performance concerns, and assists with the preparation of the Security budget, for approval.
- Coordinates, instructs, and verifies the training of all Security Officers in: Security Operating and Emergency Preparedness Procedures, Use of Force and certification as a First Responder. As well as other general training programs.
- Builds and maintains sound relationships with all internal customers, including on-site vendors (Aramark, Event Network, contractors, etc).
- Directs, monitors, and participates in the daily operation of Security Base and Patrol of all shifts. Ensures that all communications (reports and paperwork) for all shifts are detailed, accurate, and properly completed and reviewed for any necessary follow-up.
- Responsible for training, mentorship, and development of all full-time and part-time security personnel.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to frequently move from area to area while transporting items (up to 50 pounds) across Zoo grounds for various needs and the ability to position items (up to 100 pounds) short distances.
- Requires the stamina to frequently move from area to area rapidly for long durations of time.
- Repeatedly position oneself to ascend/ descend ladders and steps.
