Your Job
  • The Security Supervisors maintain a safe and secure environment for zoo guests and TZMI employees by enforcing security policies and procedures.
  • This position is responsible for co-supervising a team of security personnel to ensure the protection of zoo property, assets, guests, employees and the animal collection.
Your Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform services to ensure the safety and protection of zoo property and personnel against injury or death, harassment or intimidation, and loss or damage from any preventable cause including theft, embezzlement, damage or destruction, trespass, or sabotage.
  • Work with Director of Safety & Security and Co-Supervisor to ensure security presence is available at the zoo 24 hours per day, 365 days per year in numbers appropriate for the time and date.
  • Supervise and participate in security base coverage, patrols of buildings, outdoor areas, and zoo perimeter at designated intervals.
  • Act as first responder in a variety of incidents. First response duties include CPR, AED, first aid, and incident management.
  • Record and maintain records of zoo incidents and injuries involving zoo guests, employees, or animals. Provide reports to appropriate management personnel in a timely manner.
  • Operate fleet vehicles and golf carts.
  • Manage dangerous situations to ensure the safety and protection of zoo property and personnel, using verbal commands and calling in police when necessary.
  • Supply security for private and special events as warranted and requested.
  • Investigate suspicious activity and provide reports to management as required.
  • Train, build rapport, schedule, and discipline direct reports in collaboration with the Director of Safety & Security and co-supervisor.
  • Participate in dangerous animal escape procedures and drills.  Directly respond to emergency situations involving dangerous animal incidents utilizing TZMI-owned firearms when and where appropriate.
  • Review and approve Security Officer timecards and PTO requests.
  • In collaboration with the security team, update and maintain all key/access-control systems for the zoo.
  • Issue and manage keys, radios, and gate codes for staff, contractors, and vendors as appropriate.
  • Support Director of Safety & Security with contacting and scheduling vendors on an as-needed basis.
  • Provide oversight to Security Officers to ensure completion and accuracy of routine tasks. 
  • Submit work orders to other departments to ensure a safe/secure environment.
  • Communicate safety/security policies and procedures to employees, volunteers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Work with Director of Safety & Security to execute long-term improvements/projects.
  • Routinely fill in for Security Officers.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with TZMI's policies and applicable laws.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to TZMI’s workplace values.
  • Know and follow zoo policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
Supervisory Responsibilities                                                        
  • Directly co-supervise up to ten employees in partnership with the Director of Safety & Security and co-supervisor.
  • What We Expect
  • Required Qualifications, Education and/or Experience
  • Associate’s degree from college or university and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of guests, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint or Prezi, and popular internet browsers.
