Senior Staff Veterinarian

Under the general direction of the Senior VP of Animal Health & Living Collections, the Senior Staff Veterinarian is responsible for providing medical services to the animal collection to promote their health and welfare. This includes consultation with staff on the design and modification of animal facilities, health management of staff and other zoonotic concerns, and establishing and conducting quarantine or testing procedures that comply with applicable government regulations. In addition, this position will support the overall operation of the Animal Care Center including administrative duties for medical records maintenance and recruitment and management of the department’s staff related to veterinary medicine.                       

Essential Duties:                    
  • Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive, and professional) working attitude and appearance. 
  • Provide exceptional health care to the animal collection by managing clinical cases, both internal medicine and surgical; providing diagnostic services, treatment, and follow-up of all animal medical problems; assisting in managing animal nutrition program; and providing emergency medical services 24 hours a day.
  • Assist with implementing a preventative health care program by scheduling and conducting annual examinations, administering species-appropriate vaccinations and de-worming, and obtaining other supportive laboratory data; Perform necropsies on all deceased collection animals and submit appropriate samples for further laboratory testing.
  • Consult with staff on the design or modification of animal facilities.
  • Assist with Occupational health management of staff and other zoonotic disease concerns.
  • Mentor and supervise the Veterinary Internship Position.
  • Establish and conduct quarantine or testing procedures that comply with applicable government regulations.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and management of the department’s staff related to veterinary medicine.
  • Supervise the hospital manager and staff veterinarian.
  • Oversee the zoo’s animal health biosecurity programs, including quarantine and health assessment of animals that are leaving or arriving in the zoo’s collection.
  • Serve on the zoo’s Animal Health Committee.
  • Assist with nutritional management of the zoo’s animal collection.
  • Serve on the Animal Well-being Committee and the Research Committee
  • Assist with the development and management of the animal health (ACC) budget
  • Perform administrative duties as directed.

Qualifications
  • Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited veterinary college.
  • Capable of securing the necessary licensing to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Arizona.
  • Capable of securing a USDA license and becoming state-accredited.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience with exotic animals and 1 year at an AZA-accredited Zoological Institute is preferred.
  • Capable of performing simple laboratory tests and interpreting the results.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer proficiency specifically with word processing, spreadsheet, and the ZIMS program preferred.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and working in a team environment.
  • Can bend, stoop, crawl and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test, DMV check and clear annual TB test.
