Staff Veterinarian

Under the general direction of the Senior Staff Veterinarian, the Staff Veterinarian in this position is responsible for providing all animal healthcare-related oversight to the zoo’s animal collection. In addition, this position will support the overall operation of the Animal Care Center including administrative duties for medical records maintenance and assisting with recruitment and management of the department’s staff related to veterinary medicine.                    

Essential Duties:                    
  • Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a WILD (friendly, helpful, positive, and professional) working attitude and appearance.
  • Provide health care to the animal collection by managing clinical cases, providing diagnostic services, treatment, and follow-up of all animal medical cases; assisting in managing the animal nutrition program; assisting with acquisitions and dispositions; and provide or support emergency animal health services seven days a week with the other veterinarians at the zoo.
  • Implement a preventative health care program by scheduling and conducting medical examinations and administering species-appropriate preventative health measures.
  • Perform or submit necropsy cases on all deceased collection animals and submit appropriate samples for further laboratory testing.
  • Following up on pathological diagnoses as related to preventing disease in the animal collection.
  • Consult with staff on the design or modification of animal facilities related to animal health.
  • Serve as a mentor for the Zoological Medicine clinical internship program.
  • Manage quarantine and disease testing for incoming and outgoing animal acquisitions and dispositions.
  • Manage the veterinary aspects of the Escaped Animal Emergency Procedures as it relates to the recapture of zoo animals.
  • Responsible for the recruitment and management of the department’s staff related to veterinary medicine.
  • Collaborate with Midwestern University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and University of Arizona’s College of Veterinary Medicine to deliver a clinical externship rotation to fourth-year veterinary students.
  • Perform administrative duties as directed.

Qualifications
  • Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary college.
  • Minimum two years of post-graduate zoological experience.
  • Capable of securing the necessary licensing to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Arizona.
  • Capable of securing a USDA accreditation in the state of Arizona.
  • Completion of training in a post-graduate zoological medicine program is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer proficiency specifically with MS Word, Excel, and the ZIMS record-keeping program are preferred.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and working in a team environment.
  • Can bend, stoop, crawl and lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background check, drug test, DMV check and a negative test for tuberculosis.
