What you get to do:
  • Teach Ambassadors proper husbandry procedures, training methods, and safety guidelines through active participation.
  • Provide open communication between management and all members of the department. Responsible for information exchange and follow-up.
  • Responsible for proper staffing of animal areas through effective scheduling. Maintain a flexible work schedule to include participating in all shifts of assigned area and working weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Support and adhere to the Zoo’s Guiding Principles (staff development and culture, conservation and education, sustainable population planning, animal behavior management, animal health and animal welfare
  • Responsible for area maintenance including submitting work orders, working with other departments to ensure work is completed, communicating needs to Curator, and participating in the development of exhibit modifications and surrounding areas as needed.
  • Work in conjunction with other departments as necessary. Participate in the coordination of outside vendors and internal ambassadors to accomplish projects such as area construction and park events.
  • Assist in promoting, developing, and completing research projects as opportunities arise.
  • Committed to staff development including mentoring, training, and opportunities in-situ and ex-situ.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with ambassadors and guests.
  • Responsible for the overall daily care, maintenance, and training of a diverse animal collection.
  • Ensure safe daily operations in the Zoological Department, and ensure that all Busch Gardens quality, safety, and husbandry standards are adhered to.
  • Responsible for maintaining team member morale and motivation in assigned area(s) and throughout the department when applicable.
  • Participate in developing and implementing short-term planning and long-range objectives.
  • Assist and support management in supervising, mentoring, performance evaluations, developing training plans, scheduling, daily record keeping, and policy and procedure development.
  • Additional responsibilities also include but not limited to: participate in zoo interviews, assist management with yearly budget, coordinate handling of animals, coordinate animal moves and introductions.
What it takes to be successful:
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet Busch Gardens driving guidelines.
  • College degree preferred in Psychology, Biological Sciences or related fields.
  • Must have 5 years of experience within a zoological facility (AZA preferred).
  • Strong work ethic and self-discipline- Zoological Supervisor is a frontline supervisory position
  • Team-oriented, with a positive, supportive attitude.
  • Must be flexible in work locations as placement will depend on business needs and career development opportunities.
  • Work a flexible schedule/hours based on business need to include: opening, mid-, and closing shifts; nights, weekends, holidays, and Zoo Manager on Duty (MOD) shifts.
  • Knowledge of animal collection management, animal diets, natural history, animal welfare and husbandry, applied animal behavior and training
  • Proficient in Microsoft software products. Knowledge of SEA systems (Kronos, ParkWare, TRACKS, etc) preferred.
  • Current ambassadors applying should not have any significant performance deficiencies within a six-month period.
  • Must be process and detail oriented as well as possess the ability to handle multiple projects with strict deadlines in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • Must be able to work successfully both independently and in a team environment.
  • Must demonstrate consistent initiative, creative problem-solving skills, excellent communication; written and verbal, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Professional and outgoing presence required.
  • Must be willing to comply with and ensure Ambassadors comply with all SEA grooming guidelines and employment standards.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all legal, company and department training requirements to include but not limited to passing required tests and certifications within established timelines.
