What you get to do:
- Supervise safety guidelines in all animal areas
- Oversee the teaching of proper husbandry procedures, training methods and safety guidelines through active participation
- Ensure open communication between management and all members of the department, making them aware of all daily priorities and changes with responsibility for information exchange follow-up
- Responsible for proper staffing of animal areas through effective scheduling
- Oversee the development of area team members through active communication, critique and example as well as teaching cooperation skills by example and through instruction with members of the Zoological Operations
- Take an active role in both concept and design of new animal habitats, tours and experiences working in conjunction with other departments as necessary
- Provide staff with materials necessary to fulfill animal and Aquarist needs (i.e., reading material, video, safety equipment, supplies, and departmental manuals)
- Recognize and reward good employee morale and motivation in an assigned area and assist in the evaluation of departmental employees including annual performance evaluations and development plans
- Responsible for excellent guest relations and satisfaction
- Responsible for design and implementation of effective proactive and reactive behavioral programs
- Perform other duties as assigned
What it takes to succeed:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field preferred
- Leadership experience preferred
- At least 21 years old
- Possession of a valid state driver’s license
- At least 7 years relevant experience
- At least 2 year's experience at Senior 1 level
- SCUBA certified and be able to complete annual physical swim competency review
- Ability to complete provided CPR training
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to swim and work in/around water
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to lift, push and pull 50 pounds
- Comfortable with heights
- Comfortable with exposure to noise, vibrations and motion
- Ability to train on and properly use protective gear
- Comfortable working around fumes/dust/odor
- Comfortable working around chemicals
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and temperature extremes
- Available to work varying shifts/hours including opening, mid, and closing shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays based on business needs
