From assisting the veterinarians with animal procedures to conducting a variety of diagnostic tests and maintaining accurate records, our full-time Veterinary Technicians are always on the go! We are currently seeking to add another Veterinary Technician to our team.
- The Zoo’s Veterinary Hospital is a 15,000 square foot, fully equipped facility with patient and quarantine wards.
- The successful candidate will join the veterinary department staff comprised of four veterinarians, two veterinary technicians, one hospital area manager, one hospital keeper, a nutrition center manager, and two nutrition center technicians to provide care for our animal collection.
- Ideal candidates are committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. Working under the direct supervision and direction of the veterinarians, the Veterinary Technician will assist in all aspects of medical care of animal collections.
- Duties include, but are not limited to, administering treatments, assisting in immobilization, diagnostic and surgical procedures, radiography, ultrasound exams, endoscopy, necropsies, sample collection, drug dispensing, inventory maintenance, hospital facility and equipment maintenance, and participation in conservation and research projects.
Requirements and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- A veterinary technology degree from an AVMA accredited program and the ability to be registered in the State of Indiana.
- A minimum of one-year clinical experience in a zoological park.
- 3-5 years professional work experience.
- A strong background in performing in-house laboratory testing including, hematology, serum chemistry, cytology, urinalysis, and parasitological exams.
- Experience in avian and reptile hematology is preferred.
- A working knowledge of ZIMS computer medical record keeping system is also beneficial.
- Predominantly indoor environmental conditions, although there is some exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
- Must have the ability to transport and move items of thirty (30) pounds of force occasionally and items of twenty (20) pounds of force frequently.
- Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a telephone.
