Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 700 animals representing nearly 175 species. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and okapi encounters.
- The Zoo’s growing Marketing & Communications department is seeking a creative, dynamic individual to join our team of communications professionals as a Communications Coordinator with a focus on our Zoo.
- We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that is positive, motivated, and engaging, and will enthusiastically represent Brevard Zoo in all aspects of the job.
- The Marketing & Communications team consists of its VP of Marketing, Director, Senior Communications Manager, Senior Marketing Manager, Graphic Designer and Communications Coordinator for the future Aquarium & Conservation Center.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field.
- 3-5 years’ experience (including internships) in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field
- Obtain Florida Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
- Experience managing social media channels in a professional setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent understanding of grammar, punctuation, spelling and other elements of written language.
- Excellent storytelling and research skills.
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
- Experience with photography, videography, video editing, web design, graphic design and other creative skills.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience working with news media, from pitching stories to leading media tours.
- Familiarity with aquariums, marine life, zoos, animals, conservation and related topics.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
- Write and edit content for email campaigns, news releases, website, blog entries, social media, reports and other media in adherence to the Zoo’s style guide and communications calendar.
- Assist in managing social media channels for the Zoo, including, but not limited to: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube.
- Coordinate video and photoshoots, and edit content based on various needs.
- Support content creation for social media-based Zoo campaigns.
- Support revenue-generating events, campaigns and projects.
- Collaborate with all departments to find and write meaningful stories for owned communication channels and external media pitches.
- Co-host, produce and edit Brevard Zoo podcast, Paws for a Moment along with Senior Communications Manager and Aquarium’s Communications Coordinator.
- Write and format email campaigns and e-newsletters for Zoo.
- Assist in the general maintenance of several websites.
- Design, create and/or review print and digital collateral.
- Assist in media tours, photoshoots, video shoots and other public relations as necessary.
- Serve on internal committees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- (L) Light work
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
- Indoor office environment most often with frequent movement outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions.
- Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.
WORK SCHEDULE:
- May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.
TRAVEL:
- This position requires travel throughout Brevard County, and occasionally outside the County.
