Zoo Miami is currently seeking an exceptional individual to support our keeper staff with their animal husbandry efforts. This team works with a variety of taxa which may include mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
- We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that is looking to enter the animal care field at a high-performing AZA institution.
- Candidates will be relied on heavily to support the animal husbandry routines as well as provide guest engagement opportunities by being approachable, engaging and passionate while delivering exceptional customer service.
- This position reports directly to the Animal Care Supervisor.
- They are responsible for the daily maintenance and care of the animals and exhibits in their assigned routine including raking, shoveling, sanitation, enrichment, record keeping and dispensing food and water as directed.
- Also, provides exemplary guest service experiences to all zoo guests through guest engagement opportunities such as animal handling and public presentations.
- Work hours are up to 29 per week on a varying schedule.
Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:
- Daily maintenance routines of animal exhibits as set forth by AZA, USDA, Zoo Miami, and area supervisors.
- Observes animal behavior and reports unusual/abnormal behavior to a supervisor.
- Assists in the preparation and distribution of diets as directed.
- Assists in the maintenance and disinfection of food preparation and distribution areas.
- Assists in the preparation, distribution, and evaluation of daily enrichment materials.
- Records animal behavior and observations in accordance with protocols or as directed.
- Performs related duties including special projects as required.
- May have to lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience Required
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Eighth grade.
- One year of experience in guest service or general labor is required. Must possess a Driver license.
- Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associates degree and six (6) months of experience in an accredited facility is highly preferred. This is a part time hourly position with Miami-Dade County.
